Aptis Reading Test Part 1: Sentence Comprehension

As you know by now, every component of the Aptis Test gets more difficult as it progresses. This means the first task is always the easiest. Sentence comprehension is the task you have to do in Part One of the Reading Test. It’s a multiple-choice gap-fill exercise in the form of a very short informal email, note or letter.

The texts have six gaps, and the first gap is filled for you as an example. You have to fill the remaining five gaps by choosing the correct word from three options in a drop-down menu.

We’ve designed our tests in exactly the same format as the official Aptis exam in order to give you the best way to practise. The only difference is that we’ve included pop-up explanations if you make a mistake โ€“ obviously you don’t get that in the exam! There’s only one sentence comprehension task in Aptis Reading Part One, but we’ve got three for you to do here. These practice tests are for Aptis General, but we’ll soon be posting some for Aptis for Teachers too.

Some advice on how to approach the sentence comprehension task

First read the entire text before you look at any of the options.ย  This will help you get a general understanding of the text. Then try to predict the answers. Think about the part of speech that you need โ€“ is it a verb, a noun, an adjective …? If you already have an idea, it will help you choose the correct option.

The recommended timing for this task is only three minutes, so try not to take too long to make your choice. Always read the whole text again once you’ve chosen your answers, and see if they sound right. You can always change your answers if you think you’ve made a mistake.

Reading Test Part One:ย  Instructions

You simply click on the drop-down menu and choose the correct option. In our practice tests we’ve given you only one option for the first gap (in the exam it’s already filled in). So that leaves you five gaps to fill.
