Aptis for Teens: Vocabulary Test 1
The Aptis for Teens Vocabulary Test, together with the Grammar Test, forms part of the Core Test component of the exam.
In this Core Test (as in the Aptis General one) you have to do 50 questions in 25 minutes. The questions are divided equally between grammar and vocabulary.
That means you have to answer 25 vocabulary questions in 12.5 minutes, so you can take up to 30 seconds per question. However, we recommend you try to leave a little time at the end to make sure that you’ve answered all the questions.
The questions are always multiple-choice format with three options to choose from. Our practice tests are in the same format as the official Aptis for Teens test.
Test format
There are four question-types:
1) Word matching
For this part of the test, you have to match synonyms – words which have the same (or very similar) meaning. You have a drop-down list and you have to select five words from ten options.
2) Meaning in context
You have to complete the sentence by selecting a word from the drop-down list that perfectly fits in the blank space. Choose the answer only after you have understood the meaning of the words from the context (select five words from ten options).
3) Definition matching
In this part, you read a definition and you have to choose the word which fits the definition. For example:
Not afraid to face danger = a) confidential b) brave c) crucial. The answer here is ‘brave’.
4) Collocation matching
You have to match two words (from a drop-down list) which you usually find together. For example:
traffic + a) car b) roads c) jam. The answer here is ‘jam’.
You get one mark for each correct answer.
