Aptis for Teens: Grammar Test 1
The Aptis for Teens Grammar Test forms part of the Core Test component of the exam. The other component is the Vocabulary Test.
In the Aptis for Teens Core Test you have to do 50 questions in 25 minutes. The questions are divided equally between grammar and vocabulary. The grammar component of the test contains 25 questions, which means you can take up to 30 seconds per question.
They’re always multiple-choice questions with three options to choose from. Most of the questions test formal written English. A small number of questions test spoken English, such as knowing the appropriate grammar to use in a particular situation (formal or informal situations, for example). Let’s look at an example of a typical written grammar question:
You [ ought / must / should ] to study more if you want to pass the exam.
The correct answer here is ‘ought‘.
The spoken grammar questions sound more conversational. They usually take the form of a short exchange, as in the following example:
Peter: “How about going to the cinema this evening?”
Vally: “No, I don’t [ like / fancy / want ] going out tonight – it’s too cold.”
The correct answer here is ‘fancy‘.
The Grammar Tests cover a range of structures in order to prepare you for the Core Test. But on our site you can also find posts with mini-tests and other types of exercises that concentrate on particular grammar points. These will help you practise for your exam in general.
Don’t worry if you make a mistake while you’re doing the test, as reminders of the rules pop up to explain the grammar after you answer each question. When you finish the tests you can check through the answers and look at any mistakes you’ve made. We recommend that you note down any structures you have problems with. Then you can check our B1, B2 & C1 Grammar Reference to see if we’ve covered those points. And if not, we always recommend Raymond Murphy’s excellent English Grammar in Use.
Our practice tests are in the same format as the official Aptis for Teens Core Test.

You have a maximum of 30 seconds per question, as in the official exam. If you take too long, the quiz will automatically finish.
